Owned by the General Council of Mayenne, Sainte-Suzanne castle was built in the 17th century by Guillaume Fouquet de la Varenne, a statesman and Minister of Henry IV. Since 2009, it has been home to the Architecture and Heritage Interpretation Centre, a place dedicated to Mayenne's heritage offering temporary exhibitions, conferences and educational workshops. The 11th-century Romanesque keep still stands near the Renaissance lodge, and distinguished itself by making Sainte-Suzanne the only stronghold to withstand the assault of William the Conqueror's troops! Equipped with footbridges, the keep offers a superb panoramic view over the roofs of the village, the Coëvrons hills, the Erve Valley and Charnie Forest.
Not far from the town of Sainte-Suzanne, La Ferté-Clairbois, Maine's medieval and cultural centre based within a fortified farm, will take you back to the Middle Ages, with horse-riding displays and medieval meals.
