Majestic and impressive from the top of its imposing silhouette overlooking the banks of the Sarthe, the Abbey of St. Peter in Solesmes, founded in 1010, is a major centre for Gregorian chant. It is occupied by a community of Benedictine monks, and only the abbey church is open to visitors.
This contains masterpieces of the French Renaissance in its transept: the Saints of Solesmes, two sculpted groups from the 15th and 16th centuries. The Entombment of Christ, in the south arm, and scenes relating to episodes of the Virgin's life – the Swoon, Dormition, Assumption and Triumph of the Virgin – in the north arm make it an essential destination for all lovers of sacred art. Maybe you will be lucky enough to attend a choir service during your visit to the abbey. An unforgettable experience as the abbey is filled with the sound of Gregorian chants from the Solesmes monks' choir...
